Welcome to Mirna's Page

I am still working on this page about my wife and why she is actually the legal owner of the private school that is the central focus of our strictly nonprofit educational project.

The short story is:

  1. It is Mirna's Dream to do something to help the poor children of her country. She grew up poor and had very little access to quality education herself. She has struggled hard to learn about the world, finishing high school and learning English as an adult. Besides being the person in charge of the daily operations of CBS, she is currently learning French and wants to go on to University just as soon as she has time. She is also learning first hand about the big difference a quality education can make in the lives of the poorer children in her country.
  2. Mirna is the legal owner of school instead of a registered NGO or other legal entity for two very simple reasons. One, our funds are very limited and the legal costs of establishing the appropriate entities in Honduras are more than it cost us to build and outfit several classrooms and two, we considered that it would be much easier and more efficient get the school up and running if Mirna and I could make the required decisions between us without needing to refer everything to a board. It is quite possible that we would still be discussing the school's architectural design instead of figuring out how many buses we need to take over 200 students on an excursion if we had to get 9 board members to agree before taking the next step.
  3. Although an official Honduran nonprofit entity might make it a little easier on occasions and our plans definitely include establishing one for the long term, it does not rank as high on our list of priorities as more classrooms, books and computers. Regarding our actual nonprofit operation, we keep detailed and transparent books on all our building and operating expenses and will happily make these available to anyone who is interested.

And now, here is a photo of Mirna supervising the school's performance on Independence day parade 2005.

She doesn't wear sunglasses very often but she had stayed up all night making sure that everything was ready for us to start the parade on time very early that morning and wanted to insure that her tired eyes did not detract from her otherwise incredibly bright, cheery and energetic persona.
