Construction
of our current facility began during the first week of July (2001).
Our international volunteer's worked side by side with our Honduran
crew. Cement was mixed while friendships were forged and an 80X30 foot
basic school structure was completed only several hours before the children
arrived for their very first day in a brand new school. We have had
an ongoing construction project every summer and added at least two
classrooms each year since. We have also worked hard to retain as many
of the Mango trees as possible.

| Due to a large
increase in expected enrollment for the 2005 – 2006 school year we decided
to build an additional 2 story 8-classroom block over this past summer
(located to the right and behind the building you see above - see below).
We are running a little behind schedule and way over budget however we
expect to have four new ground floor classrooms ready for classes by the
end of October, which will solve our most pressing “lack of sufficient
space” problems. The second floor that is planned to include four additional
classrooms, a library and a computer lab will then be completed as quickly
as available funds and labor permit. In addition to the new classroom and library block, which has been made possible with lots of help from our many friends around the world, we had another most pressing construction need that is also very close to completion. Trying to figure out how to get 200 students to share only two toilets will not be a problem for very much longer. We now have a brand-new “washroom block” next to the Glorieta that has separate washroom facilities for boys and girls and has 5 stalls in each section. We hope this will make the “long line for the bathroom” a thing of the past.

Crescent
School Outreach
|
In March 2005 we were fortunate to have a team from The Crescent
School in Toronto, Canada come for a week to help in the building of our
new kitchen facilities. Children and staff are served hot lunches and healthy
recess snacks every day at our school. For some children on scholarship,
the free lunch that they receive is their only healthy meal of the day.
This March another team will visit from the Crescent School to construct
a playground for the students. Our students will be overjoyed to finally
have a place to swing and slide. The team from the Crescent school worked relentlessly to complete their project with our construction supervisor, and the final result is the prettiest Glorieta (cafeteria) in Cofradia, now known as Joey's Cafe! The addition of a commercial grill and oven, a popcorn machine and a set of natural fruit juice dispensers has made it possible for us to have fast, economical meals, snacks and drinks available while at the same time keeping most chips (churos), candy, gum and carbonated sugar-loaded soft drinks completely off the school menu. YES, WE ARE THE FIRST SCHOOL IN COFRADIA WITH NO COLA AT ALL. Our "Glorieta" is Natural Pine, Natural Rock and Green Metal and even in this election year neither blue nor red appear on the exterior. We are committed to maximizing the nutritional value of each and every school day from the wholesome Granola with milk that is available before classes start to Dona Mirna's Chili Sauce (made in house) on your "baleada" or our the 100% natural fruit juice, drinks and popsicles (the only sweetener used is local "Dulce" containing all of the sugar cane's natural nutritional qualities). Everything is made fresh each day from the freshest and most wholesome ingredients available. | |||||||||
