San Pedro Sula

The economic hub of Honduras has everything that any modern city could offer. Only a 30 minute bus ride it has street markets, fun bars, and incredibly modern hotels and malls for those days when you need to use high speed internet, eat a burger, or escape the heat or rain! Western movies are also shown here. Bus tickets round trip cost about $1.50 USD.

Copan

Cofradia is surrounded by some major backpacker destinations. Perhaps the most popular are the Copan Ruins located about 3 hours by bus. These Mayan ruins are considered the “Paris” of the Mayan ruins and are famous for their heiroglyphics and intricate tool work. Nearby Copan are opportunities for horse back riding, thermal springs, and a famous butterfly sanctuary.

Lago Yajoa.

About an 1.5 hours from Cofradia by bus is the pristine and beautiful Lago Yajoa set in the mountains. This lake is famous for it’s incredible bird watching. On a given day, visitors can see up to 60 or more different species of bird including the Toucan.

About 30 minutes from the lake are the specatacular Pulhapazak Falls. Camping is allowed in this clean and well kept park. There are opportunities to do canopy tours over and around the falls. Being suspended 40 meters above the thundering falls. An unforgettable experience is venturing under the waterfalls to view the caves behind it. This isn’t an adventure for the timid. It’s a combination of hiking, swimming, climbing and jumping. Water crashes down on your head as winds swirl blinding mist at hurricane-like speeds. Just as you’re terrified to go any further, the tour is over as quickly as it started and up to drier grounds to allow the adrenaline to subside.

Bay Islands

The bay islands are about a 4 hour drive by bus from Cofradia. This is an international backpacker backed with young people looking for a cheap SCUBA diving certification. On the bay islands of Utila and Roatan, SCUBA certification is among the cheapest on earth at about $275 - $300 USD for full certification which takes several days to complete. Utila is world famous as the only place on earth where whale sharks can be spotted twelve months a year. These giant gentle creature can be viewed from a number of snorkeling tours. The Bay Islands are also a paradise for beaches, snorkeling, sunsets, beer, music, and western food.

North Coast

For weekend trips to the beach, the City of Tela is a 2 hour bus ride to the north. There are national parks nearby with secluded beaches and Garifuna villages lining the beach.

Guatemala

Guatemala City and the beautiful city of Antigua are 7 hours by bus. Antigua is set between several picturesque volcanos including Volcan Pacaya which is an active volcano that can be climbed and spews lava daily. Antigua is a great place to take a Spanish class for very reasonable prices. Several hours from Antigua is the ever popular backpacker destination of Lake Aititlan. This is a very relaxed place for meeting travelers and language courses.
